Fall in San Diego might look a little different than it does in the rest of the country. We may be heading to the pumpkin patch in shorts and ordering an iced pumpkin spice latte because it’s still 80 degrees outside, but there are SO many ways to experience fall in San Diego, especially with kids.

From pumpkin patches and apple picking to fall festivals, Halloween events, trick-or-treating, Oktoberfests and even places to find fall leaves, I’ve put together the ultimate guide to fall in San Diego for families.

And instead of giving you one massive list of events to scroll through, I’ve broken everything down by what you actually want to do.

Pumpkin Patches in San Diego

Pumpkin patches are probably the easiest place to start, and San Diego has everything from actual working farms to small neighborhood patches where you can grab a pumpkin after school.

Some of the biggest names include Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center, Rancho Bernardo Pumpkin Farm, Goff Family Pumpkin Patch at Liberty Station, Pumpkin Patch Bonita, Pumpkins Bonita and Family Christmas Tree Farm in El Cajon.

But they’re definitely not all the same.

Some are worth spending half a day at with the kids, while others are better for grabbing a pumpkin and taking a few cute photos.

Apple Picking in Julian

If there’s one fall day trip I think every San Diego family should do at least once, it’s apple picking in Julian.

Apple-picking season typically begins in September and can be surprisingly short. Some orchards close as soon as their apples are picked out, so this is one fall activity I wouldn’t wait until late October to do.

Volcan Valley Apple Farm is one of the classic U-pick experiences near Julian, while Ranchita Del Reo offers a smaller, reservation-based orchard experience.

There are also apple experiences at Julian Farm and Orchard. Its 25-acre property is about three miles from historic downtown Julian and combines orchards with farm animals, U-pick flowers and seasonal activities. Its 2026 apple tours require reservations.

Make it an entire Julian fall day

Don’t drive all the way to Julian, pick apples, and immediately drive home!

I’d pair apple picking with:

Apple pie or cider → lunch in Julian → walk around downtown → pumpkin/farm experience → scenic drive home.

Julian Fall Activities Beyond Apple Picking

Julian deserves its own category because you can build an entire fall day without even picking an apple.

One of the biggest family options is Julian Autumn Jubilee at Fort Cross, running Saturdays and Sundays from September 26 through October 25, 2026.

It includes a homegrown pumpkin patch, cider pressing, hayrides, farm animals, crafts, a spooky maze, lawn games and other hands-on activities.

Julian Farm and Orchard is also hosting its Harvest Fest every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from September 4 through November 15, 2026, with its pumpkin patch, farm activities, food and drinks.

If you’re looking for that “it actually feels like fall” experience, I’d absolutely put a Julian day on your fall bucket list.

Best Kid-Friendly Halloween Events in San Diego

There are a TON of Halloween events in San Diego, but if you have younger kids, you probably aren’t looking for something terrifying.

Thankfully, several of San Diego’s biggest attractions go all-in on family-friendly Halloween.

SeaWorld Halloween Spooktacular

SeaWorld’s daytime Halloween celebration includes trick-or-treating, Halloween activities, and kid-friendly seasonal entertainment. This year they have an all-new Baby Shark Halloween Show too!

Best for: Younger kids who want Halloween without anything too scary.

LEGOLAND Brick-or-Treat

LEGOLAND California’s Brick-or-Treat returns with trick-or-treating, Halloween entertainment and seasonal LEGO characters. New for 2026 is Brick-or-Treat Street, an immersive walkthrough with six Halloween houses.

Another highlight of Brick-or-Treat is that it feels like a full Halloween experience rather than just trick-or-treating. Throughout the park, families can encounter special Halloween characters, collect treats along themed trails, catch live entertainment and enjoy plenty of festive LEGO decorations and photo ops.

Since everything is designed with kids in mind, it’s an especially good choice for families with toddlers and preschoolers who want all the Halloween excitement without anything too spooky.

Beachside Fall Fest at Belmont Park

This may be the most San Diego fall activity ever.

Belmont Park transforms for fall with seasonal food, entertainment and free trick-or-treating on weekends in October, and you’re still literally steps from the beach.

Best for: Combining Halloween with a Mission Beach day.

Sesame Place Halloween

Sesame Place traditionally offers a Halloween celebration geared toward younger kids, making it another one I’d watch if you have toddlers or preschoolers.

HalGLOWeen at the San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo gets a Halloween makeover during HalGLOWeen, a family-friendly nighttime celebration happening Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings throughout October.

Starting at 5 PM, the Zoo comes alive with glowing lights, Halloween music, interactive games and special entertainment. Kids can dance along with the Skeleton Band, meet colorful Boo Crew characters, see glowing singing pumpkins, watch acrobatic performances and even learn about some of the Zoo’s “spookier” animals.

This is a great Halloween option for younger kids because it’s festive without being scary—and kids can even come dressed in costume!

Even better, HalGLOWeen is included with regular Zoo admission or membership, and it lines up with Kids Free San Diego in October, when kids 11 and younger can visit the Zoo free with a qualifying adult admission.

Halloween Light Show at The Camp Store — Carlsbad

One of the most unique and very San Diego Halloween activities happens right on the bluff at South Carlsbad State Beach.

The Camp Store brings back its Halloween Light Show at the end of September, transforming its beachfront location with thousands of synchronized lights and music after sunset. Grab pizza, watch the sunset over the ocean and stick around for the show.

The best part? The light show is free and open to the public. The Camp Store is located inside South Carlsbad State Beach, but you don’t have to be camping to visit. Parking and vehicle access can be limited, so give yourself extra time or plan to walk in from nearby.

Where to Trick-or-Treat in San Diego

This deserves its own guide because there are so many alternatives to neighborhood trick-or-treating.

You’ll find everything from shopping-center trick-or-treating to trunk-or-treats, theme parks and huge community celebrations.

Many smaller community events haven’t released their final 2026 schedules yet, so this is one section I’ll continue updating as Halloween gets closer. San Diego’s tourism authority also notes that seasonal listings can change, so double-check event details before heading out.

Fall Festivals in San Diego

Not everything has to involve pumpkins.

Fall also brings some of San Diego’s best street festivals, community events and cultural celebrations.

One worth putting on the calendar is the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival, happening October 10–11, 2026. The free two-day festival takes over part of La Jolla Village with more than 170 juried artists, live entertainment and family-friendly activities.

You can also find smaller community fall festivals throughout the county, including family-oriented neighborhood events like University Heights Fall Festival.

Fort Cross Autumn Jubilee in Julian

If you’re looking for a fall activity in Julian that has a ton for kids to do, add the Fort Cross Autumn Jubilee to your list! This family-friendly fall experience takes place at Fort Cross Old Timey Adventures and combines classic fall activities with some of the unique hands-on experiences Fort Cross is known for.

The Autumn Jubilee typically includes activities like pumpkin picking, a petting zoo, hayrides, cider pressing, candle dipping, archery, tomahawk throwing, a corn maze, farm games and more. It’s a great option if you want more than just a quick pumpkin patch stop and are looking for an activity that can fill a good portion of your day.

One of my favorite things about visiting Julian in the fall is that you can easily turn it into a full day trip. Spend a few hours at Fort Cross, then head into downtown Julian for apple pie, cider and a walk around town.

New for 2026, Harvest on the Promenade is bringing a small-town-style fall festival right to Liberty Station. The event was created by two San Diego moms and designed specifically with families in mind.

Kids can explore The Glowing Hollow, an immersive display filled with illuminated hand-carved pumpkins; use real hammers and nails to create something in the Builders Workshop; make crafts in Makers Village; meet bunnies and climb aboard tractors at The Farmstead; and compete in old-fashioned family field games like sack races and pumpkin rolls. There will also be live music, a Harvest Market, seasonal food, cider, donuts and a family scavenger hunt.

One thing I really like about this event is that the activities are included with admission, rather than having to purchase separate tickets once you’re inside. Food, drinks and shopping are extra.

Oktoberfest in San Diego

Yes, Oktoberfest can actually be a family fall activity, and you don’t have to travel to Germany to celebrate Oktoberfest! San Diego has several Oktoberfest celebrations throughout the county with everything from authentic German food and live oompah music to beer gardens, kids’ activities and street festivals.

There are Oktoberfest celebrations around the county that range from traditional beer-garden experiences to full community festivals.

La Mesa Oktoberfest

One of San Diego’s biggest Oktoberfest celebrations and one of my top picks for families. Downtown La Mesa transforms into a huge German-inspired festival with live music, multiple biergartens, German food, vendors and plenty for kids, including a Kinder-focused area, pumpkin activities and crafts.

Best for: Families who want the biggest festival experience

Oktoberfest in El Cajon

If you’re looking for the most authentic Oktoberfest experience, head to El Cajon. Hosted by the German American Societies of San Diego, this celebration features traditional German food, folk dancing, contests, live German music and a dedicated Kids’ Zone.

Best for: A traditional German Oktoberfest experience

Encinitas Oktoberfest & Artisan Faire

This free North County festival combines Oktoberfest with a huge artisan fair featuring more than 130 local makers. You’ll also find German-style beer, Bavarian entertainment, food, crafts, face painting and other family-friendly activities.

Best for: North County families

Tierrasanta Oktoberfest

A smaller neighborhood Oktoberfest with German food and beer, polka music, yodeling and family-friendly festivities. One of the things that makes this celebration stand out is the fireworks show at the end of the event.

Best for: A smaller community Oktoberfest

University City Oktoberfest

Another neighborhood option that’s especially worth watching for families. Expect German-inspired food and drinks alongside music, games and activities for kids.

Best for: An easy family-friendly neighborhood festival

Ocean Beach Oktoberfest

This one is VERY different from the family festivals above. Ocean Beach turns Oktoberfest into a 21+ beachfront party with live music, DJs, beer, contests and tons of energy right next to the Pacific.

Best for: Adults and a fall date night

Carlsbad Oktoberfest

Another North County option featuring traditional German-inspired food, live music, a biergarten and Oktoberfest games and activities.

Best for: A classic North County Oktoberfest

Craftoberfest at Liberty Public Market

Liberty Public Market gets into the Oktoberfest spirit with brewery features, food specials, tastings, games and live entertainment throughout the market.

Best for: Foodies and adults who want a more casual Oktoberfest experience

Where to See Fall Leaves Near San Diego

Yes, you CAN find fall colors near San Diego.

You just need to leave the coast and probably wait until more like December to actually see the colors change haha.

Your best bet is heading into the mountains and backcountry around Julian, Palomar Mountain, Mount Laguna and Cuyamaca.

And because our fall color happens later than in many parts of the country, this is something I’d save for later in the season rather than trying to leaf-peep in September.

Turn it into a day trip with a hike, picnic and warm drink afterward.

This is a BIG one for San Diego families.

Kids Free San Diego runs October 1–31, 2026, and kids 12 and under can receive free admission, meals, hotel perks, and other offers at participating attractions and businesses throughout the county when the specific offer requirements are met.

This is one of my favorite times of year to knock expensive San Diego attractions off your family bucket list.
